First, I want to clarify that this software is named such as "free" by its developers, but when you try to download the Windows version from their website, you find an unavoidable donation requirement. This could be a disguised business strategy, but it's definitely a hoax, despite of their permission to "...download anyway StreamerOne Client for free from other web sites or file sharing communities available in the internet. We do not put any limitation to the free sharing of the program among users." (and thus, I uploaded to rapidshare for you).
StreamerOne is a video streaming platform which uses a p2p system that allows simultaneous audio and video handling over to an almost unlimited number of users.
Generally, the audio and/or video streaming conventional technology follows a flow in which a unique emitter broadcasts its signal to a server, which manages the distribution between the audience and takes on with the resulting bandwidth expense, which proportionally increases with the number of spectators.
With StreamerOne it is not like that any more! Since it makes use of the p2p technology, each spectator becomes a transmitter at the same time; this distributes the broadband consumption between all the users, removing the need for spending on an expensive multicast server and the rise of expenses by a major audience.
StreamerOne opens in your own default web browser (the user can configure TCP ports and a preferred player path for the application - works with winmedia 9 and higher, VLC, etc), and immediately performs a Connection Test. Then you can choose among several Italian channels (only). Unfortunately, there is no chance of selecting different channels other than the already included in the StreamerOne system, and all of them are Italian only . Therefore, you'll find some notices in Italian in the web page website (you can see this clearly on screenshoot #1).
Despite there is a request for donation, you can download and use this program for free.
If you use a router, you must forward or map the ports, in order to take full advantage of this software. Also, if you use a firewall, then you must configure it in order to allow the needed connections (see directions at developer's site). Also, the internet connection should be ADSL minimum, because slower connections don't work appropriately.
Be careful, StreamerOne keeps working in background (System's tray) after you close your web browser. To close it, right-click on the tray icon and select Exit.
This new beta (V 0.5) uses the H.264 encoder for better compression rate and faster broadcasting using less broadband.
